If your baby is army crawling but having trouble progressing towards crawling on their hands and knees, this one is for you! There a few different reasons why your little one may have trouble transitioning from army crawling to hands and knees crawling. Here are a few things you can check out at home to give you a hint about what’s going on:
1. Are they army crawling with both arms and both legs? Most of the time, when I see a client who’s having trouble with hands and knees crawling, there is a hint in the way they’re army crawling. Often, they are pushing with only one of their legs while the other one drags behind. Others will allow both legs to lag while they use primarily just their arms to pull them. This is a great hint that there’s something going on in your little one’s body and it’s likely the reason why they aren’t able to progress to hands and knees. Possible causes include tightness or weakness in their core or hips. 2. Are they able to sit in side sitting? Another common sign I see in clients with this issue is that in sitting, they’re often stiff in their legs or they can’t shift side to side to get into a side sitting position. Side sitting is when one leg is bent in front of them and the other leg is bent behind them. If your little one is 8 months or older and is not able to do this in both directions, that is another nice hint that there may be some tightness or weakness in their core, shoulders, or hips that is preventing them from crawling on hands and knees. 3. Are they obsessed with standing at an early age? (6-8 months) Being obsessed with standing is another sign of tightness or weakness in the core, shoulders, or hips. Standing allows your little one to lock out their entire body to find stability.. and finding stability feels safe! Having to stay on their hands and knees requires a lot more strength and control in their core, shoulders, and hips which can be much more difficult than standing and can feel much less safe. If one or all of these sound like your little one, I have great news! All of these are things that can be improved with a little time and intentional practice.
